PORT GLASGOW BOXER'S CAREER IN RUINS

Print | Email

A young champion boxer's career is in ruins after he was convicted of brutally assaulting another teenager in port Glasgow.

17 yr old Grant Quigley battered and stamped on 19-year-old Thomas Thruel near a roundabout in Brown Street, Port Glasgow, in November 2010.

At the High Court in Glasgow, Quigley, from Hillside Drive in the town, was found guilty of assault to the danger of life.

The trial heard how Mr Thruel was knocked out and CCTV footage showed him lying on the ground after the attack as Quigley and co-accused Grant Murray and Lee Docherty both fled.

Murray and Doherty were also cleared of the attempted murder charge but admitted assault.

Quigley alleged he and his brother Greg had previously been bullied by Mr Thruel and friends.

He won a string of amateur titles and was intervied for Your Radio News after he was selected to represent Scotland at last year's Commonwealth Youth Games, where he won a silver medal.

Sentence was deferred for backgrounds reports.
